When land started to be enclosed and privatised, many small time farmers lost their jobs. This caused many people to flock to cities and towns in search for work. In the first 30 years of the nineteenth century, cities such as Birmingham and Sheffield doubled in population. Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Glasgow more than doubled in population in this time.
These towns and cities grew without any planning or government supervision. |
